Preparing your business for an Odoo implementation

Most Odoo rollouts that struggle don’t struggle because of Odoo. They struggle because the business started configuring before it had answered a few basic questions about itself. None of this requires hiring a consultant to figure out — it’s internal homework, and doing it before kickoff is the single biggest thing you can do to keep an implementation on track.

Map your current process before you configure anything

Write down how work actually happens today, not how it’s supposed to happen on paper. Where does a sale start? Who approves a purchase order? What happens when stock runs low? The gap between the official process and the real one is exactly where a generic ERP configuration falls apart later.

Clean up your data before it moves, not after

Duplicate customer records, inconsistent product SKUs, and stale supplier pricing don’t get better by moving into a new system — they get harder to fix once they’re live. A rollout is the natural point to clean this up, and it’s much cheaper to do before migration than after.

Decide which modules you actually need first

Odoo covers a lot of ground: CRM, sales, inventory, accounting, manufacturing, and more. Trying to turn everything on at once usually means nothing gets configured properly. Pick the one or two problems that are costing you the most right now and start there. The rest can follow.

Get the right people in the room early

The people who’ll actually use the system day to day know things a process diagram won’t show you — the workaround everyone quietly relies on, the report someone builds by hand every Friday. Bringing them into discovery instead of just management saves you from configuring around a version of the business that doesn’t exist.

None of this replaces a proper discovery process, but walking in with these answers already worked out means that process moves faster and lands closer to how your business actually runs.
